Publisher Bandai Namco and developer Colopl shared new information and footage for Tales of Luminaria during its first Tales of Luminaria Show, as well as opened pre-registration for iOS via App Store and Android via Google Play.
The new information includes details on the game's story and 21 main characters, a new trailer titled "Answer," first gameplay footage, and the announcement of an anime adaptation titled Tales of Luminaria: The Fateful Crossroad.
STORY + OTHER STUFF
I'll fight for my justice… and kill yours if I must.
Long ago, this land was home to beasts the size of mountains that have now become petrified. Mana overflowed from their remains, drawing people who sought its power, and civilizations sprang up.
People came to revere these mana-producing creatures, which they named "Primordial Beasts." They built their lives around them. Thus began the worship of the Primordial Beasts.
Time moved ever onward, to the present day…
War erupts between the Jerle Federation, an alliance of countries who worship the Primordial Beasts, and the Gildllan Empire, which has enjoyed explosive development thanks to advanced technology. The fires of war burn ever brighter.
Federation knights-in-training, Imperial soldiers, and adventurers who owe allegiance to neither side… 21 very different people weave the story of their bonds, and the paths they forge through a turbulent age. Will their varying outlooks lead them to hidden truths about the world? You'll have to play to find out…
There's a similar bunch of copy addressing the world, characters and game-flow, so check that out if you're interested. It's all relatively boilerplate - though it's worth mentioning that the game is dubbed and the English VA are very recognisable and good (Christina Vee (previously Velvet), J. Michael Tatum (previously everything), Monica Rial, Christopher R. Sabat, Caitlin Glass, etc etc).
Character designs are from Shun Saeki (of Food Wars, which is probably why I'm not particularly into them lol).

Boo, 3D ;(
GAMEPLAY
THAT'S IT
What do you think? Personally, this and Tales of Crestoria (which I've really enjoyed tbh) kind of make me mourn the death of dedicated handhelds, but oh well :( Will check out anyway.
Here, it's hot coffee... If old (give me a break, it's hard coming up with these!).

These designs don't say "Tales" at all. Very pandering as one might expect from a gacha game, but it's just not what I'd want from this series in particular. Gameplay looks... okay, I guess? Less than lukewarm overall.

I like Gacha games but this doesn't look good.. wish they actually put more effort into Crestoria instead.

Is this genshin-esque combat with full character control?
Anyway what the heck's up with the aspect ratio, is this really portrait only?

Not excited for another Tales gacha. The game is designed in portrait view. That dialogue is cringy AF. Looks okay I guess?

Oh Lordy....never played a portrait only game....this is different...but yeah, I'd rather have an exclusive Switch title than just a mobile game that will most likely be another gacha...
By the way....How far along is Tales of Crestoria? They can't possibly drag its story out for years right? Or will the main storyline be completed at some point shortly and then they'll just fill it with events?
I know Tales of the Rays was shutdown for the west but did they ever finish that game's main storyline?

It's very disappointing when a game such as Genshin Impact exists and is extremely successful that developers are still making such dumbed down version of games like this. IMO, should have been Tales of Arise gacha version or something.

Vast open worlds like those of Genshin Impact are very expensive. Genshin cost over 100 million to develop and they keep on pouring countless millions into it as they continually expand it. Genshin became a huge hit and got those 100 million multiple times back, but you can't for certain say that every game like it will have the same success. It will remain a big gamble (no pun intended).

I feel the biggest gamble for a game like that now is if China and other governments finally come down hard on the gatcha mechanic and suddenly your most reliable money supply dries up.

That's a lot of money. I wonder how much something like this Tales game cost to make compared to that.

I was interested in learning more about the game solely from an "it's a tales-related project" standpoint, but that combat looks terrible
not even in a "punishing gray raven has ruined all mobile game combat for me" sense, it just looks aggressively bad

You forget that Mihoyo had years of establishing a reputation for high quality mobile games (even if low-budget) and a fandom around them before they developed Genshin Impact - It wasn't a Hail-Mary gamble, it was the buildup of years of proven success on a formula they kept expanding on with each new game.

When I was referring to it being a gamble I was referring to other companies trying to emulate Genshin. Success on Genshin's scale is not guaranteed.
One of the companies I could totally see being able to emulate Genshin's success is Cygames with a Granblue Fantasy Impact though.

Oh right, in the case of Namco and Tales obviously it would be a massive gamble on account of their established reputation for these games having poor longevity before they make another one and move on.
